Box Twenty have been involved in the development of the Energy and Servicing Strategy to support the Outline Planning application for the redevelopment of Broadwalk Shopping Centre into a vibrant mixed-use development to enhance the local area.

The Broadwalk Shopping Centre is located on the Wells Road in Knowle, Bristol.

The shopping centre is now aging and consists of a range of discount shopping outlets, bingo hall, library, pharmacy and other retail and food outlets. The shopping centre is struggling to stay in business due to a lack of footfall. This development seeks to revitalise the shopping offering as well as creating a vibrant mixed-use development to enhance the local area.

The proposed development will regenerate the failing showing centre, creating a development containing up to 420 residential units and up to 11,500m2 of retail floor space across the new and refurbishment areas of the building.

Box Twenty were appointed by Moorsfield & Cerberus to produce an Energy Strategy and high level servicing options to support the Outline Planning application.

The development was still in the concept design stage and therefore we carried out benchmarking calculations based on CIBSE TM46 to assess the potential energy consumption of the final scheme. It was then possible for us to estimate the potential reduction in carbon emissions through fabric improvements, efficient building services equipment and the introduction of renewable technologies to meeting Bristol City Council’s target of 20% reduction in carbon emissions.

This Energy Strategy was submitted as part of the Outline Planning Application. Once the development achieves planning Box Twenty hope to be involved in the continuing design of this scheme. We would produce the RIBA Stage 2-4a design as well as updating the strategy with sample SAP and SBEM calculations.
